Organizing Your Home For When A Disaster Strikes

There seems to be an ever increasing amount of natural disasters occurring, it can feel alarming, unsettling, and cause anxiousness if your home is not organized and you aren’t prepared. That’s why it’s so important to use your organizational skills, organizational hacks, and organizing ideas in order to be prepared before an emergency or natural disaster. In this blog post, you will learn the best tips to help you and your family be prepared and organized before and during a disaster strike, especially when it comes to wildfires and forest fires.

This post is all about using your organizational skills, organizational hacks, and organizing ideas to be prepared for when a disaster strikes – before and during.

In one of my favourite movies there’s this quote, “If you have 10 seconds to get out of your home while it’s on fire, what do you grab?” Lately, I’ve thought about this a lot more often. There have been a number of large fires throughout the province where I live, even some within a few kilometers distance of my home. It can be scary! In an emergency, the first thing you do is either panic or freeze. It’s hard to think in a moment of panic. That’s why it is so important to be prepared, remain calm to the best of your ability, and listen to public officials.

Everything You Need to Do BEFORE…

Prepare mentally – recognize the fact that a disaster could strike. Think, “what type of disasters could affect me and my family where we live?”

Prepare an Emergency Kit & Go Bags

Include:

  • Important Documents such as birth certificates and passports
  • Clothing for several days
  • Any medicine, prescriptions or supplements
  • Comfort items for children
  • Think about collecting items that carry great memories and are meaningful to you
  • Don’t forget about your pets too!! Pets and their supplies: leash, bag of food, carriers, water, etc.

Have an evacuation plan

Have a meet up spot for you and your family. Create a list of friends and family you would contact.

Helpful Resources:

  • Find the complete list of items you should pack on the British Columbia Government Website
  • Build an Emergency Kit online on the United States Government Ready Website

Everything You Need to Do DURING…

  • Be quick
  • Remain calm to the best of your ability
  • Listen to public officials
  • Contact friends and family

By following these steps and preparing ahead of any disaster, you and your family can have a sense of feeling safe during a very high strung emotional situation.

This post is all about the steps you need to take in order to have you, your family, and your house organized and prepared before and during a disaster strikes.
