It’s officially spring! What does that mean? Time to put away the snow shovels and start bringing out the outdoor furniture, flowers and sunshine.
What’s the point to having an outdoor space at your apartment if you aren’t going to utilize it to it’s full potential? There are a variety of ways that you can spruce up your apartment balcony all by the power of design and a little bit of creativity. It’s easy!
This post is all about the apartment balcony ideas that are perfect for spring and summer!
1. Get an outdoor couch or chairs
I would suggest measuring out the apartment balcony first before buying anything. Figure out how many people your apartment balcony can hold. You don’t want it to feel so overcrowded that there’s nowhere to walk around. For a larger apartment balcony, an outdoor couch is perfect! For a smaller apartment balcony, a few chairs (2-4) would be perfect!
When buying an outdoor couch, there are a lot better deals if you buy the couch in a “package”. Typically when you do this it’ll probably be a couch and two couch chairs all together. If you happen to be lucky enough to have multiple apartment balconies or a friend with similar style to you, you could buy the set and split it up.
2. Get end tables
End tables don’t seem that important, but really they are! When you are sitting out on your apartment balcony on a warm spring or hot summer day with a glass of lemonade or cider, where are you gonna place down your cup?
There’s a few ways you can get end tables. You could buy them from the store or online (easiest option), or you could make your own little stands. You can DIY stands from such things as tree stumps, recycle large glass jars or large pots turned upside down. All of these can work, it mainly just depends on the esthetic you are trying to achieve.
3. Add outdoor pillows
Pillows are so fun to play around with. I’m not talking about an outdoor pillow fight. I’m talking about all the different textures and colours you can play with to add some fun life to your apartment balcony. My personal preference is to pair a neutral style outdoor couch or chairs with some fun pillows.
4. Add lights
Probably my most favourite thing ever are twinkly lights! They can make your apartment balcony come to life at night. Depending on the strata rules where you live, to add lights there are two main options I would suggest. Either use solar lights or hanging string lights.
Solar lights are great for when you can’t drill into the wood and hang the lights or if you want the easy option of just placing the lights on the floor / end tables.
Hanging string lights are a bit harder to do, only because it involves more time and effort to have the right tools to hang them. But trust me, it is so worth it!! I was able to hang mine which are two sets of 10 feet lights. It took me about an hour and a half only because I ran out of screws half way through. So if you want to speed it up a little, make sure you have enough screws when you first start.
5. Propane firepit
Aside from lights, a propane firepit is my next favourite thing! Some of my most favourite memories as a child are from camping with family sitting around a campfire telling stories and laughing. Being able to have a propane firepit means that you can bring those memories into your “backyard”. I found that the beginning of spring was a great time to start scouting stores for a propane firepit as it is the beginning of the camping season and there are some great deals. Just have to search a bit harder to find them. Unlike end of season, when you can find deals nonstop. Prices can be anywhere from as low as $50 and can get up to over 100s of dollars.
One of my greatest tips – make sure that everything you buy will also look good and functional in a home once you’re out of the apartment life.
If you add these 5 must-have apartment balcony ideas, you are going to have an apartment balcony to swoon over.
